History
Over 150 years of horseracing history
Founded in 1866, Newton Abbot Racecourse has grown from a local racing venue into one of the South West’s most popular destinations for summer jump racing. With a rich heritage shaped by community, resilience and ongoing development, the racecourse continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
A Rich Racing Heritage
Newton Abbot Racecourse was established in 1866 when local enthusiasts secured the current site to create a dedicated space for equine sport. Racing quickly gained popularity, becoming a regular fixture in the region. Despite interruptions during the First and Second World Wars, including its use as a military site, the racecourse returned stronger than ever, with 17,500 people attending the first post-war meeting in 1945.
Evolving Through the Years
Over the decades, the racecourse has continued to grow and modernise. The main grandstand was opened by Her Majesty The Queen Mother in 1969, followed by the introduction of corporate facilities in 1990. Continued investment has enhanced the experience for racegoers and businesses alike, with the racecourse celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2016 and continuing to improve year after year.
