Diligent, trained near Tiverton by Nigel Hawke, won for the third time at Newton Abbot on Wednesday when taking the afternoon’s feature race, the Class 3 Racing Welfare Mental Health Awareness Week Handicap Hurdle over an extended two and a quarter miles.

Racing Preview - Wednesday 11 May 2022

Wednesday’s meeting at Newton Abbot Racecourse takes place in Mental Health Awareness Week and, appropriately, the feature race is named after Racing Welfare, a charity supporting everyone who works in the racing industry.

Six have been declared for the Class 3 Racing Welfare Mental Health Awareness Week Handicap Hurdle over an extended two and a quarter miles in which Diligent, a course winner over fences and hurdles, looks to have a good chance. He finished runner-up to the useful Knappers Hill last month, form which was boosted when the winner scored again in a valuable race at Sandown Park.

Racing Review - Wednesday 4 May 2022

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls was the man in form at Newton Abbot yesterday, landing the first two races, including the feature £22,500 Racing Partnership TRP Handicap Chase with Eritage.

Run over a trip of two miles and five furlongs, it was Falco Blitz and Eritage who took the field along in the early stages tracked by Rouge Vif, with bottom weight Goa Lil, who had shortened from 7/2 to 9/4 in the betting, bringing up the rear. Eritage opened up a clear lead with a circuit to go and, with Falco Blitz pulling up early in the back straight, he only had Rouge Vif for company as he turned to face the last two fences.
