It’s not often that racecourses see soft ground in the middle of July but, if the current spell of rain continues, the runners at Newton Abbot on Monday could encounter very different conditions to those they have experienced so far this season.
Fortunate Fred, the choice from three entries for Lambourn trainer Jamie Snowden, and Frankie Faulkner, third to Songo over a shorter trip here last month, could fight out the finish in the opening Class 3 Visit attheraces.com Maiden Hurdle. Fortunate Fred has been placed on soft ground and Frankie Faulkner won his second point-to-point on good to soft going, so both should handle the conditions.

There was a big crowd at a sun-drenched Newton Abbot on Friday for the first of four meetings at the course in July and favourite backers got off to the best of starts as odds-on Guinness Affair landed the feature Class 3 Newtonabbotrace On Twitter Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.
All three of the runners had competed against each other at Warwick at the end of May when Magistrato beat Stepney Causeway with Guinness Affair, who was returning after a 601-day break, a well-beaten third. Magistrato had since changed trainers, finishing fourth on his next start at Aintree for Deborah Cole, whereas Guinness Affair had stepped up on that run to win at Hexham.
Friday sees the first of four meetings at Newton Abbot during the month of July with the Class 3 NewtonAbbotRace on Twitter Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase the feature of a six-race card that gets underway at 2.40pm.
Trainer Milton Harris has chosen Stepney Causeway from his two entries and this Worcester winner was also engaged in the later newtonabbotracing.com Handicap Hurdle and at Stratford on Tuesday, so he clearly thinks that this race offers the best chance of winning.
