Three fixtures for Newton Abbot this July

Monday sees the first of three meetings coming up in July at Newton Abbot, when the course stages a seven-race card that gets underway at 2.15pm with the Visit Newton Abbot Racecourse On Facebook Maiden Hurdle.

Highlight of the afternoon is the fourth, the class 3 NewtonAbbotRace On Twitter Handicap Chase which carries the biggest prize fund, as well as being over the longest distance with a trip of three miles, two and a half furlongs.

Continuing a noticeable theme this season of races commemorating moments in people’s lives, the second is the Happy 65th Birthday Paddy Harman Beginners´ Chase, for horses yet to score over the big obstacles. The closing race is the ATR Sky 415 Conditional Jockeys´ Handicap Chase due off at 5.15pm.

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has been slow getting into stride this season, but after Black Cow had narrowly failed to land the opener at the last meeting, he struck to take the big prize with Mcllhatton, ridden by new stable jockey Sam Twiston-Davies.
This was the sixth success for the Ditcheat yard this summer and took Nicholls’ winnings above the £50,000 mark, although he is well down the table which is headed by Jonjo O’Neill with nearly £130,000. The situation is likely to have changed by the time the Newton Abbot season ends in October as more of the stable’s inmates start to appear.

Champion jockey A P McCoy drew a rare blank from his three rides at the last meeting but, with a strike rate of 32% overall this season, can never be left out. McCoy is closing in on the record number of winners sent out by legendary West Country trainer Martin Pipe, for whom he rode so successfully. Pipe sent out a total of 4,190 winners in Great Britain, Ireland and France, of which McCoy rode 1,152 over some eight years to April 2004.

With the summer holidays less than a month away, the racecourse are preparing for another busy summer of racing this year, with six fixtures taking place throughout July and August.
