Newton Abbot Report Saturday 20 August 2016
Trainer Philip Hobbs and jockey Tom O’Brien combined to land Newton Abbot’s feature race on Saturday when 6-1 shot Golden Doyen saw off the challenge of Oh Land Abloom in the £22,000 toteexacta Handicap Hurdle.
The win wasn’t without incident, however, as favourite Sharp Rise, who was in the lead and travelling strongly, hit the top of the third-last hurdle, unseating jockey Aidan Coleman. This left Golden Doyen clear of Oh Land Abloom, but the gap had narrowed to just half a length at the final flight.
Everything rested on how the two jumped and, whereas, Oh Land Abloom was sloppy, Golden Doyen flew the obstacle to go clear on the short run-in for a comfortable success.
Just had three lined up for the opening toteScoop6 Bet Now Novices´ Handicap Hurdle, with top-weight Mr Mountain, who broke his duck at the sixth attempt when beating Princess Roania over course and distance last month, setting out to make the running. Aidan Coleman settled Nikki Steel, who was receiving 4lb in weight, in behind the leader and they jumped to the front at the second-last flight, staying on strongly to win by two and a quarter lengths, with Buy Me Out a never-threatening third.
Gowanauthat, who had been given a break since the beginning of June, was seeking a four-timer in the toteScoop6 Racing´s Millionaire Maker Handicap Chase. He missed an engagement at Stratford on Thursday to wait for this race and, despite a rise up the handicap, extended his winning sequence when making much of the running to beat Strongly Suggested and Theatre Mill.
It was a close-run thing, however, as Strongly Suggested had just taken the lead going to the final fence, but an untidy jump allowed Gowanauthat to regain the advantage and hold on by half a length.
Notarfbad was well-backed to make a winning return after a long absence at Stratford in June, but the gamble went astray when he was pulled up before the last fence. Jeremy Scott’s chaser put matters right when making all the running to score easily at Uttoxeter next time out and, although running from a 10lb higher mark here, made it two wins in a row when taking the toteScoop6 Results At totepoolliveinfo.com Handicap Chase in some style.
Clear of his field from three fences out, Notarfbad had 21 lengths to spare over last year’s winner Easily Pleased, who improved on some recent disappointing runs, with the consistent Miss Tenacious back in third.
Trainer Emma Lavelle gained some compensation for the defeat of Mr Mountain in the opener when 9-2 shot Mrsrobin, ridden by Daryl Jacob, made all the running to land the totetrifecta Novices´ Handicap Chase. Despite jumping awkwardly at the penultimate fence, Mrsrobin finished 14 lengths in front of outsider Zero Visibility, who just held on for second place from Red Penny.
Dual hurdles winner Bleu Et Noir was no match for Bagad Bihoue at Stratford last time but, with the winner having scored again since, the form looked pretty solid. Sent off the 4-9 favourite to beat his five rivals in the toteswinger Novices Hurdle, he made all the running, although needed to be shaken up to see off the challenge of The Outlaw by two and a half lengths.
Saltash trainer Jackie du Plessis does well at the course with her small string and she added another winner when Polo The Mumm and Hannah Welch took the concluding toteplace Handicap Hurdle by a wide margin from I’llhavealook.
A winner of two point-to-points, Polo The Mumm had scored on just his second run over hurdles for the stable at Worcester and, after this easy success, could win again, although the handicapper isn’t going to let him off lightly.
