Newton Abbot Preview Monday 25 July

Kick start the week and the summer holidays with an afternoon at the races today. Why not enjoy a day out with the family – remember children 16 and under and students with a valid photo ID go free!

The consistent Miss Crick, the choice from two entries by trainer Alan King, can land the feature SIS Stream Handicap Hurdle at Newton Abbot this afternoon in the hands of jockey Wayne Hutchinson.

Twice a winner over hurdles, Miss Crick looks well-weighted to score another success, having been dropped 2lb to a new rating of 119 after her defeat by Hassle at Uttoxeter. The winner was not disgraced subsequently in a hot handicap at Market Rasen behind the progressive Red Tornado and that form looks good enough for Miss Crick to see off her six rivals today.

Perspicace looked to be a hurdler on the upgrade when winning at Worcester and Uttoxeter but was down the field behind Instant Karma at Stratford last time. If he can put that run behind him, Perspicace could give Miss Crick a run for her money. After going chasing, Vesperal Dream was well behind on his return to hurdles last time, but is 10lb below his highest handicap mark over the bigger obstacles.

Beau Phil, trained by Paul Nicholls, sets the standard in the opening EPDS Racing Welfare BTO Series 2016 Maiden Hurdle, due off at 2.15pm. Despite still searching for his first win after nine starts, Beau Phil ran a good race last time out at the course, making Banny’s Lad pull out all the stops. Although the winner rather let the form down when well beaten in a handicap hurdle at Stratford eight days ago, this looks a good opportunity for Beau Phil to get off the mark at the expense of Uber Alles, who was no match for Bagad Bihoue at the last meeting.

Course winner Accessallareas returned to form at Stratford when beating Badgers Retreat and, although he has been raised 9lb to a new rating of 88, still looks well-in on his best form in the Independent Racecourses Limited, IRL Handicap Chase. He won off a rating of 96 here last year and may have the most to fear from veteran mare Maizy Missile, who belied her years to show Ladies Dancing a clean pair of heels here last month. Another to watch out for is Edgar, who runs in this race in preference to the later novices’ chase, and this consistent performer looks attractively handicapped off a mark of 96.

There is a small, but competitive-looking field for the At The Races Sky 415 Novices´ Handicap Chase in which Marju’s Quest will be looking to open his account over fences at the third attempt. He hasn’t run over the larger obstacles since June last year when unplaced in an open handicap behind Surf And Turf from a rating of 129. He has scored over hurdles at Worcester and Market Rasen in the meantime and doesn’t look harshly treated returning to chasing with a mark of 112.

Mexican Border, trained nearby at Littlehempston by Martin Hill, makes a quick re-appearance in the 80´s Gold, Here 14 August Handicap Hurdle after running away with a novices’ race last Sunday. Although he carries a 7lb penalty for that win, he races off a mark of 87 compared to 85 last time and the extra couple of pounds is unlikely to stop him. Hill has struggled for winners since his best season in 2013-14, but he is just one short of a career half century over jumps, having also trained 12 on the Flat. He also saddles Easily Pleased, the mount of champion jockey Richard Johnson, but his three wins have all come over fences and it is difficult to see him having the speed to cope with Mexican Border. Another course winner Lava Lamp has found life tough of late but, despite carrying joint top weight, he is undoubtedly well-handicapped off his current rating of 107.

Present Accepted can complete a hat-trick of wins for Kentisbeare trainer Rod Millman in the Handicap Chase and Lady Robyn, who has been a model of consistency in Irish point-to-points, finishing runner-up in her last four starts, can make a winning debut under Rules for Peter and Sean Bowen in the concluding At The Races Virgin 534 Maiden Open National Hunt Flat Race.

Gates open today at 12.15 today and our first race is at 14.15. Tickets are available on the gates.
