New “One-Fit” Padded Hurdle to be Used at Newton Abbot Throughout 2013
Owners, Trainers and Jockeys should be aware that for the duration of its forthcoming season commencing 30th March 2013 Newton Abbot, in conjunction with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), will be trialling the “One-Fit” padded hurdle in all of its hurdle races.
The modified hurdle, which has been developed through the BHA’s Course Inspectorate team, consists of a standard timber hurdle frame fitted with a consistent, one-piece “closed cell” foam pad rather than using the traditional birch. The foam is textured and shaped with a convex frontage to replicate the usual birch-filled finish. This design will be used in ALL our flights of hurdles.
The hurdle has been extensively trialled over the past 18 months, including periods on two major training schooling grounds as well as extended sessions with four leading Jumps trainers. However, nothing can replicate full racing trials and Newton Abbot is now delighted to be able to host this design-validation process. The British Horseracing Authority and racecourses have made a number of important incremental safety/welfare improvements to hurdles in recent years and this development is part of that ongoing process.
The National Trainers Federation, Professional Jockeys Association and Racecourse Association all support the racecourse trial, which will be monitored on an ongoing basis throughout the year. The trial has been funded by Newton Abbot with a matched funding contribution from the British Horseracing Grant Scheme. The Scheme is one of the two mechanisms by which the proceeds from the sale of the Tote are being distributed across the Racing industry.
For any connections wishing to view the hurdle before the start of our season, the “One-Fit” hurdle will be taken to Taunton Racecourse on 28th February and Exeter Racecourse on 5th March. In addition, a flight is available to inspect at Newton Abbot with prior appointment.
For further technical information or queries on this modified hurdle please contact Senior Inspector of Courses Richard Linley on 07860 465503 or Clerk of the Course at Newton Abbot Jason Loosemore on 07766 228109.
