BEHIND THE SCENES EXPERIENCE FOR BEGINNERS AT NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE
Newton Abbot Racecourse will once again host a behind the scenes tour this season, as part of their ongoing commitment to encourage more people to experience and learn more about the sport. Taking place on Monday 8th September, the experience will be open to both horseracing novices and regulars.
The day will offer 25 lucky racegoers a unique insight into the world of horseracing, usually unseen by racecourse visitors. It’s the perfect opportunity for beginners, or as a one-off experience for racing enthusiasts, to gain a deeper understanding of the sport.
This experience will be given at no extra cost to those who purchase a Paddock Enclosure ticket, but those interested must pre-register their place by Friday 5th September as this will be limited to just 25 people.
The day will include walking the route that the horses take from the stables to the track, with a close-up view of the hurdles. Racegoers will learn more about how the fences are made, how the new padded hurdles have helped make the sport safer and how the going is decided with the going-stick. The tour will also feature an inside look at the weighing room with a talk on how weights affect racing and more.
For those who struggle to understand the betting aspect to horseracing, racegoers will be shown how to read the racecard and how to place a bet by one of the racecourse’s bookmakers.
Patrick Masterson, Managing Director of Newton Abbot Racecourse, explained the racecourse’s choice to host the day again this season: “At Newton Abbot Racecourse, we want to make sure that people are able to enjoy horseracing regardless of their experience. We have found that, even if people live near the racecourse, many are apprehensive about joining us as they feel they don’t know enough about the sport to be able to enjoy it as much as those who know more.
“Our behind the scenes tour will create a unique opportunity for people to learn more about this fascinating sport. We first trialled the behind the scenes tour last year and received such fantastic feedback that we decided to repeat the day again this season. We hope that those who attend learn something new about the world of horseracing.”
On the tour last year was Alec Monroe and Sarah Ellis. Alec spoke about his day: “The behind the scenes experience is a great idea, especially for younger people who might not know much about the sport. The tour was excellent. Hearing about the new hurdles that are currently being trialled at the racecourse was great and it’s fantastic that Newton Abbot are at the forefront when it comes to horse and jockey safety
“The behind the scenes tour was our third visit to Newton Abbot and we usually bring our daughter along. It’s a great day out for the family, especially for the children being able to see the horses up-close in the Parade Ring.”
The behind the scenes tour is open to the first 25 racegoers to pre-register their interest by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Those interested in attending the tour must register their interest by Friday 5th September as it will not be possible to register on the day. The day is offered at no extra cost to those who have purchased a Paddock Enclosure ticket for the fixture on Monday 8th September. The experience will start at 12:30pm.
Racing for the afternoon will start at 2:10pm, with gates opening at 12:10pm. For more information and to buy tickets, visit www.newtonabbotracing.com or call 01626 353235.
