Abbot's Whispers Race Review 24th June 2014

The Triton Galleries Maiden Hurdle 2m 6f looked on paper a moderate affair and it proved so as the market leaders finished well clear with half the field beaten before the halfway mark. Despite an awkward jump at the last the 8/11 favourite KALMBEFORETHESTORM trained by Helen Nelmes and ridden by Paul Moloney kept on well to hold off the strong challenge of the second favourite Black Cow with the winning margin a neck.

The Paul Nicholls trained MCLLHATTON justified being evens favourite when landing The St Austell Brewery Novices’ Chase 2m 5 ½ f. He made all under Sam Twiston-Davies and found himself strongly pressed going to the last by the Evan Williams trained Hold Court whose fall at the last left the winner 73 lengths clear of the second horse Templeton.

There was a competitive field and a decent pace set in The Handicap Hurdle 2m 1f. Nicky Henderson’s LAUDATORY ridden by Nico De Boinville led two out and held off the late challenge of Aalim the 9/4f trained by John Ferguson and ridden by A P McCoy who had been allowed to settle into the race to win by four lengths.

ROCKCHASEBULLET trained by Fergal O’Brien was ridden up with the pace to win The Gloria Hera Edwards Celebrating Permanent Residence Handicap Chase 2m ½ f. Having led from the third fence the winner was given superb ride by Paddy Brennan and although he did not jump fluently the rest of the field were also making errors behind him he was driven out to beat Porters War who had chased him from the third last by a one and a quarter length margin.

CASH FOR STEEL who was unlucky when her saddle slipped last time made up for it here when winning The David Chillery Still Celebrating His Divorce Selling Handicap Hurdle 2m 6f. Trained by Richard Phillips she went clear at the last and stayed on well under Daniel Hiskett to beat Fintan by six lengths. The winner looks capable of running up a sequence of victories in low grade contests which could explain her connections going to 8,000 guineas to buy her back.

The Lawney Hill trained EL TOREROS made all under Miss A E Stirling to land The Welcome Back Sean Dooner Lady Amateur Riders’ Handicap Hurdle 2m 3f. The winner looked to have a fight on his hands with Welsh point-to-point winner Mister Hendre until his jumping let him down at the second last and was beaten into second place by a 2 ½ length margin.
