Fun and fizz at Newton Abbot’s final fixture of the season
Newton Abbot Racecourse is calling for all horseracing enthusiasts to join them on Friday 13 October for the final time this year, as another action-packed season draws to a close with an impressive £91,000 prize fund on offer.
Racegoers looking to make their afternoon extra special can also take advantage of the final Fizz Friday package of the year. Book by 5pm on Thursday 12 October, and racegoers can enjoy Paddock entry, a racecard and either a mini bottle of sparkling wine with a cream tea or a drinks voucher and a pork roll for just £30.
Newton Abbot has seen another spectacular season of racing in 2017: quickly jumping back into action, despite being forced to abandon the first fixture of the year. Notable wins this season have come from Fox Appeal, trained by Emma Lavelle, who won the first big chase at Easter and in May jockey Ciaran Gethings riding a double on Katy P for Philip Hobbs and Nigel Hawke’s Caline Du Brizais.
Other highlights include Paul Nicholls introducing Alcala to the Newton Abbot public at the beginning of June; this horse has gone on to win four times at the course as well as the big Summer Plate at Market Rasen. On 16 June, Paul achieved his first treble at Newton Abbot with Alcala, Trevisani and Bagad Bihoue. In the last August evening meeting jockey Charlie Hammond rode a double aboard Accessallareas for Sarah-Jayne Davies and Mike Hammond’s Charlie Mon.
The big Summer Saturday fixture, worth £100,000, produced some thrilling action with Golden Birthday, trained by Harry Fry, following his July win at Newton Abbot with another great result to take the spoils. Another highlight saw local jockey Bryony Frost riding her first double at the course earlier in the year as a professional.
Looking back over the season, Patrick Masterson, Managing Director at Newton Abbot Racecourse said: “Once again, racegoers have been treated to some terrific racing and great horses. With over £1m of prize money on offer this year we have been able to host some fantastic racing here at Newton Abbot.
“We would like to thank all owners and trainers who have supported us in 2017, for the wonderful racing they have given us. We wish them every success over the winter and look forward to seeing them again next Easter.
“We would also like to extend our thanks to our racegoers, corporate guests and sponsors; we very much look forward to welcoming new faces and old back to Newton Abbot Racecourse in 2018.”
