Family Fun Raceday preview - Sunday 23 July
A big crowd is expected on Sunday for Newton Abbot Racecourse’s annual Family Fun Raceday when the course stages a seven-race card that gets underway at 2.20pm with the Racing Partnership TRP Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.
Rookie trainer Olly Murphy has entered three in the opener, headed by Gold Class, who beat stable companion Banff at Market Rasen to give the Warwickshire-based handler his first winner over jumps. Gold Class escapes a penalty for that win, which came in an amateur riders’ race, and could confirm the form. Making up the trio is Knight Commander, formerly trained by Murphy’s mother Anabel, but he looks to have plenty to do on his handicap debut.
Dual course winner Horse Force One may make his jumping debut in the John Bircham Memorial Maiden Hurdle, but could face stiff opposition from Gettysburg Address, who has two other engagements this week.
Calin Du Brizais looks to have a good chance of landing a third win at the course in the SIS Handicap Chase, with the likely danger coming from Patricktom Boru, who finished behind Fort Gabriel at the last meeting, but is now 2lb better off at the weights. Both also have entries in the closing hurdle race.
Off the track, the new children’s play area set in the Family Enclosure in the centre of the course will be open for 3-12 year olds and, to add to the fun, a magician and entertainer will be appearing from 2.00pm.
Looking forward to Sunday’s popular meeting, managing director Patrick Masterson said “We wanted to give our younger fans a special treat as they begin their holidays and some wonderful memories that will last them the whole summer through. But the fun’s not just for the kids, all the family will enjoy our magician and his amazing illusions.”
The racecourse is also on the look-out for one lucky family to be their special guests on Sunday and become Family Reporters for the day. The racecourse would like the winning family to share their experience at the racecourse including top-tips and photos from this Sunday’s Family Day. The winning family will receive a pair of Paddock Enclosure tickets, plus free entry for their children (aged 16 and under) and places on our exclusive Behind the Scenes Tour. Interested?
